Cheetah Cat

The cheetah is a big cat with several distinctive features - a slender body, deep chest, spottedpelage, a small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and a long spotted tail. Its lightly built, thin form is in sharp contrast with the robust build of the other big cats.
Cheetah Cat

Cheetah Cat

The cheetah is often confused with the leopard and the cougar. However, the leopard is marked with rosettes while the cheetah with spots; added to this the former lacks the tear streaks of the cheetah. Moreover, the leopard has rose-like spots instead of the small round ones of the cheetah.

The cougar possesses neither the tear streaks nor the spotted coat pattern of the cheetah. The serval has a very similar form as the cheetah, but is significantly smaller. Moreover, it has a shorter tail and spots that fuse to form stripes on the back.

The king cheetah is a variety of cheetah with a rare mutation for cream-colored fur marked with large, blotchy spots and three dark, wide stripes extending from their neck to the tail.

South African Cheetahs

The South African cheetah have a bright yellow or sometimes a golden coat, and its fur is slightly thicker than that of other subspecies. The white underside of the South African cheetah is very distinct, especially on the neck and breast, and it has less spotting on its belly.

The spots on the face are more pronounced, and as a whole its spots seem more dense than those of most other subspecies. The tear marks of the South African cheetah are notably thicker at the corners of the mouth, and almost all of them have distinct brown mustache markings.

Like the Asiatic cheetah, it is known to have fur behind their tail and have both white and black tips at the end of its tail. However, South African cheetahs may also have only black tips at the end of the tail. The South African cheetah usually lives on grasslands, savannahs, arid environments, deserts, semi-desert areas and mountains.

Cheetahs habitats

The cheetah can be found in open fields where they chase and hunt herbivorous mammals such as antelopes at a very high speed. In South Africa, the cheetah also prefers shrublands, high mountains, steppes, mountainous grasslands and areas with exotic vegetables where favorable preys are mostly available. The South African cheetah is currently the only most common subspecies and was widespread everywhere on southern to central Africa.

 Cheetahs Habitats

The cheetah also known as the hunting leopard, is a big cat that occurs mainly in eastern and southern Africa and a few parts of Iran. The cheetah inhabits a variety of habitats; in Africa it has been observed in dry forests, scrub forests, savannahs and grasslands.

Though they do not prefer montane regions, cheetah can occur at elevations as high as 13,000 ft. An open area with some cover, such as diffused bushes, is probably ideal for the cheetah, that needs to stalk and pursue its prey over a distance, exploiting its speed. This also minimises the risk of encountering larger carnivores.

how long do cheetahs live

Cheetahs live 10 to 12 years in their natural habitat

What color is a cheetah

Cheetah color Basically yellowish tan or rufous to grayish white, the coat of the cheetah is uniformly covered with nearly 2,000 black, solid spots. The upper parts are in stark contrast to the underbelly, that is completely white. Every cheetah has a unique pattern of spots on its coat; hence this serves as a distinct identity for each individual.

How much do cheetahs weigh

The cheetah is a big cat with several distinctive features - a slender body, deep chest, spottedpelage, a small rounded head, black tear-like streaks on the face, long thin legs and a long spotted tail. Its lightly built, thin form is in sharp contrast with the robust build of the other big cats. The head-and-body length ranges from 44–59 in.The cheetah reaches nearly 28 to 35 in at the shoulder, and weighs 46–159 lb.Thus it is clearly taller than the leopard, that stands nearly 22–28 in at the shoulder. The weight ranges of

the cheetah overlaps extensively with that of the leopard, that weighs from 62–143 lb. On the other hand, the cheetah is significantly shorter than the lion, whose average height is nearly 47 in. Moreover, it is much lighter than the lion, among which females weigh 278 lb and the males are much heavier, 410 lb.Based on measurements, the smallest cheetah have been reported from the Sahara, northeastern Africa and Iran

Fastest cheetah

The cheetah's body is specialized for speed and it is the fastest land mammal. Estes describes the cheetah as the "felid version of the greyhound", as both have similar morphology and the ability to reach tremendous speeds in a shorter time compared to other mammals.Their thin and light body makes them well-suited to short, explosive bursts of speed, rapid acceleration and an ability to execute extreme changes in direction while moving at speed.

During a typical chase, their respiratory rate increases from 60 to 150 breaths per minute. While running, in addition to having good traction due to their semi-retractable claws, cheetahs use their tail as a rudder-like means of steering that enables them to make sharp turns, necessary to outflank antelopes that often change direction to escape during a chase.

The protracted claws increase grip over the ground, while foot pads make the sprint more convenient over tough ground. The tight binding of the tibia and the fibula restrict rotation about the lower leg, thus stabilizing the animal throughout the sprint; the demerit, however, is that this reduces climbing efficiency. The pendulum-like motion of the scapula increases the stride length and assists in shock absorption.

During more than half of the time of the sprint, the animal has all the four limbs in the air; this contributes to the stride length. In the course of a sprint, the heat production in cheetah exceeds more than 50% of the normal. The cheetah retains as much as 90% of the heat generated in its body during the chase, which is considerably larger than the 20% in the case of the domestic dog.

The cheetah does not indulge in long distance chases, lest it should develop dangerous temperatures, nearly 104 to 106 °F. The cheetah will run no more than 1,600 ft at the tremendous speeds of 80 to 112 kilometres per hour. This is very rare as most chases are within 100 metres (330 ft).

Are cheetahs endangered

The cheetah is threatened by habitat loss through agricultural and industrial expansion; moreover, the animal apparently requires a large area to live in as indicated by its low population densities. The cheetah appears to be less capable than the leopard in coexisting with humans. As such, human interference can disturb the activities, such as hunting and feeding, of cheetah. Another threat to the survival of cheetah is repeated encounters with farmers and pastoralists, who might kill them to save their livestock from potential harm.

Game hunters can also try to harm cheetah as these carnivores can deprive the hunters of valuable game. Roadkill can be another threat, especially in areas where roads have been constructed near the natural habitat or protected areas.

The cheetah has been classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and is listed under Appendix I of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). In 2014, the CITES Standing Committee recognised cheetahs as a "species of priority' in their strategies in northeastern Africa to counter wildlife trafficking. As of 2015, the IUCN gives the total number of surviving individuals as nearly 6,700

9 Biggest rodents in the world

Rodents can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Most rodents are small animals with robust bodies, short limbs and long tails. They use their sharp incisors to gnaw food, excavate burrows and defend themselves. Most rodents eat seeds or other plant material, but some have more varied diets.
what is the largest member of the rodent family ?
Biggest rodents in the world

Are all rodents mammals ?

all rodents are mammals
Rodents tend to be social animals and many species live in societies with complex ways of communicating with each other.

Are all rodents herbivores ?

Most rodents are herbivorous, feeding exclusively on plant material such as seeds, stems, leaves, flowers and roots. Some are omnivorous and a few are predators

Rodents use their sharp incisors to gnaw food, excavate burrows and defend themselves. There are species that are arboreal, fossorial  and semiaquatic.

what animals are in the rodent family ?

Rodentsfamily are  mice, rats, squirrels, prairie dogs, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, hamsters, and capybaras.

what is the largest member of the rodent family ?

The biggest rodent in the world is  capybara, can weigh as much as 146 lb, most rodents weigh less than 3.5 oz. The smallest rodent is the Baluchistan pygmy jerboa, which averages only 1.7 in, in head and body length, with adult females weighing only 0.132 oz
  1. Capybara   weigh 77 to 146 lb
  2. Capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals found throughout almost all countries of South America (except Chile.Capybara live in densely forested areas near bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, swamps, ponds, and marshes, as well as flooded savannah and along rivers in tropical forest. Capybara have flourished in cattle ranches.
  3. Coypu   Also known as the river rat is a large, herbivorous, semiaquatic rodent and the only member of the family Myocastoridae. The distribution of coypus tends to contract or expand with successive cold or mild winters. During cold winters, coypus often suffer frostbite on their tails, leading to infection or death. As a result, populations of coypus often contract and even become locally or regionally extinct as in the Scandinavian countries and such US states as Idaho, Montana, and Nebraska . During mild winters, their ranges tend to expand northward. For example, in recent years, range expansions have been noted in Washington and Oregon,as well as Delaware.
    Are all rodents mammals
  4. Guinea pig  Domesticated guinea pigs occur in many breeds, which have been developed since their introduction to Europe and North America. These varieties vary in hair and color composition. The most common varieties found in pet stores are the English shorthair , which have a short, smooth coat, and the Abyssinian, whose coat is ruffled with cowlicks, or rosettes

  5. Long-tailed chinchilla Their hair is 0.79–1.57 in long, with gray, white, and black bands; it is silky, extremely soft, and firmly adhered to the skin. The general color of upper parts is bluish or silvery gray; the underparts are yellowish-white. The tail has long, coarse, gray and black hairs on its dorsal surface
  6. Eurasian red squirrel The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several different coat colour morphs ranging from black to red. Red coats are most common in Great Britain; in other parts of Europe and Asia different coat colours co-exist within populations, much like hair colour in some human populations.Red squirrels occupy boreal, coniferous woods in northern Europe and Siberia, preferring Scots pine, Norway spruce and Siberian pine. In western and southern Europe they are found in broad-leaved woods where the mixture of tree and shrub species provides a better year round source of food
  7. Brown rat. The fur is coarse and usually brown or dark grey, while the underparts are lighter grey or brown. The brown rat is a rather large true murid and can weigh twice as much as a black rat and many times more than a house mouse
what animals are in the rodent family

what kind of animals live in the tropical rainforest biome

Tropical rainforest biome

Tropical rainforests are divided into different strata, or layers, with vegetation organized into a vertical pattern from the top of the soil to the canopy

Each layer is a unique biotic community containing different plants and animals adapted for life in that particular strata. Only the emergent layer is unique to tropical rainforests, while the others are also found in temperate rainforests.

what kind of animals live in the tropical rainforest biome

Tropical rainforest animals-forest floor

This more open quality permits the easy movement of larger animals such as:
ungulates like the okapi, tapir ,Sumatran rhinoceros and apes like the western lowland gorilla

  1. species of reptiles,
  2. Amphibians,
  3. Insects.
  4. Animals water

The tropical rainforest  floor also contains decaying plant and animal matter, which disappears quickly, because the warm, humid conditions promote rapid decay. Many forms of fungi growing here help decay the animal and plant waste.

Tropical rainforest animals-Understory layer

  1. The understory layer lies between the canopy and the forest floor. The understory is home to a number of Birds
  2. Small mammals
  3. Insects
  4. Reptiles
  5. Predators. Examples include leopard , poison dart frogs, ring-tailed coati, boa constrictor

The tropical rainforest vegetation at this layer generally consists of shade-tolerant shrubs, herbs, small trees, and large woody vines which climb into the trees to capture sunlight. Only about 5% of sunlight breaches the canopy to arrive at the understory causing true understory plants to seldom grow to 10 feet.

As an adaptation to these low light levels, understory plants have often evolved much larger leaves. Many seedlings that will grow to the canopy level are in the understory.

Tropical rainforest animals-Canopy layer

The tropical rainforest  canopy is the primary layer of the forest forming a roof over the two remaining layers. It contains the majority of the largest trees, typically 30–45 m in height. Tall, broad-leaved evergreen trees are the dominant plants. The densest areas of biodiversity are found in the forest canopy, as it often supports a rich flora of epiphytes, including orchids, bromeliads, mosses and lichens.

These epiphytic plants attach to trunks and branches and obtain water and minerals from rain and debris that collects on the supporting plants. The fauna is similar to that found in the emergent layer, but more diverse. It is suggested that the total arthropod species richness of the tropical canopy might be as high as 20 million.

Other species habituating this layer include many avian species such as

  1. Yellow-casqued wattled hornbil
  2. Collared sunbird
  3. African gray parrot
  4. Keel-billed toucan
  5. Scarlet macaw
  6. Spider monkey
  7. African giant swallowtail
  8. Three-toed sloth
  9. Kinkajou
  10. Tamandua

Tropical rainforest animals-Emergent layer

The tropical rainforest emergent layer contains a small number of very large trees, called emergents, which grow above the general canopy, reaching heights of 45–55 m, although on occasion a few species will grow to 70–80 m tall.

Some examples of emergents include: Balizia elegans, Dipteryx panamensis, Hieronyma alchorneoides, Hymenolobium mesoamericanum, Lecythis ampla and Terminalia oblonga. These trees need to be able to withstand the hot temperatures and strong winds that occur above the canopy in some areas.

Several unique faunal species inhabit this layer such as
  1. Crowned eagle
  2. King colobus
  3. Flying fox

The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests, and comprises the largest and most biodiverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, with an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species.

Amazon rainforest  includes territory belonging to 9 nations.  60% of the amazon rainforest in in Brazil, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Suriname,French Guiana,Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana and Ecuador

Wet tropical forests are the most species-rich biome, and tropical forests in the Americas are consistently more species rich than the wet forests in Africa and Asia.

The amazon rain forest  is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals. To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 2,200 fishes,1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region.
One in five of all the bird species in the world live in the rainforests of the Amazon, and one in five of the fish species live in Amazonian rivers and streams. Scientists have described between 96,660 and 128,843 invertebrate species in Brazil alone.

black miniature schnauzer

Black miniature Schnauzer is a breed of small dog of the Schnauzer type that originated in Germany. Black and white miniature Schnauzers developed from crosses between the Standard Schnauzer and one or more smaller breeds such as the Poodle and Affenpinscher

Miniature Schnauzers are recognized in three colors silver, solid black, black  and a color known as 'salt and pepper'. There is a controversial fourth color variant in Miniature Schnauzers, pure white, which is not recognized universally.

miniature schnauzer dogs

Miniature Schnauzers breed remains one of the most popular worldwide, primarily for relatively small size. Miniature schnauzer have a double coat, with wiry exterior fur and a soft undercoat. In show trim, the coat is kept short on the body, but the fur on the ears, legs, belly, and face is retained. Recognized coat colors are black, salt and pepper, black and silver, and pure white.

Miniature Schnauzers  tails are naturally thin and short, and may be docked . They will also have very straight, rigid front legs, and feet that are short and round  with thick, black pads.
